China reintroduces steel export controls, but challenges persist; Re-iterate bullishoutlook for European Steel, stay OW MT, VOE and SSAB
Last Friday, China’s Ministry of Commerce (“MOFCOM”) announced mandated exportlicenses for 300 steel-related products, spanning across the entire steel value chain, whichrequires steelmakers to submit contracts and quality certificates although no explicit volumecaps were announced. The JPM China Basic Materials Research team considers this policyto be constructive but any positive impact on reducing low-price competition and supportinghigher-value and greener products is only likely to appear longer term. In the near term, theycontinue to see relatively high level of Chinese steel export, keeping global steel prices underpressure (link).
